Opportunities for training

The Spinal Unit has considerable training opportunities.

Specialist Registrar:

This is an 8 month posting as part of the Northern Orthopedic Registrar Rotation. The aim of the posting is to get familiar with the management of common spinal disorders and orthopaedic Trauma.

Registrars so far:

  • Mr Ata Kasis
  • Registrars rotate equally between Mr Friesem and Mr Krishna. In a 6 week cycle they would spend 2 weeks doing trauma, and 4 elective spinal surgery.

    Spinal Fellowship:

    In 2005 we established a 1 year Spinal Fellowship. This is open to trainees who have completed their basic Orthopedic or Neurosurgery Training . The post is open to both UK and international applicants( as long as they can be registered with the GMC).

    This rotates equally between the 2 spinal teams. There are considerable clinical and research opportunities. We have 8 operating lists per week. There is a full time researcher, and there are opportunities to work with him on projects that are already running.

    Appointments are advertised in September in the BMJ, and the post starts in January. We would prefer applicants to have demonstrated a keenness for Spinal Surgery , and have some experience in this regard.

    Fellows so far:

    Mr Yair Barzilay( Israel); Yair was our first fellow, and is now a spinal surgeon in Israel.

    Mr Laurence Marshman: Laurence completed his Neurosurgery training and then joined us for the fellowship. In 2007 he will move to Australia for another fellowship.
